Top Japanese Companies To Invest In Right Now

TOKYO--The Japanese government on Monday lowered the reading of the country's growth over the third quarter, saying capital expenditure was weaker than first thought, as lackluster foreign demand took steam out of a brisk rebound fueled by the economic policies of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, known as "Abenomics."

Japan's gross domestic product, or the total value of goods and services produced, grew an annualized 1.1% in the July-September period from the previous quarter, the Cabinet Office said, changing a preliminary 1.9% increase announced three weeks ago.

That's a sharp deceleration from the first half of this year, when the Japanese economy grew around 4.0%, outperforming the U.S. Economists surveyed by the Nikkei and The Wall Street Journal had expected a downward revision to 1.5% growth. The U.S. economy overtook Japan in the third quarter, registering a revised 3.6% expansion.

    The horrendous flops
I wrote a blog post explaining why Knightsbridge Tankers (NASDAQ: VLCCF  ) made the right move in slashing its dividend and why its prospects were looking up. The shipping company was extremely undervalued at the time, so why was I wrong? I made the mistake of thinking that a company trading below book value represented good value for shareholders. In reality, many shipping companies were -- and are -- trading below shareholders' equity because their fleets are enormously valuable assets. Unfortunately, that inflates book value enormously. It may not seem so harmful at first, but perpetually low charter rates have actually forced many shippers -- including Knightsbridge -- to sell tankers at less than market value to keep the lights on. Those practices can erase large chunks of book value overnight.

Boy was I wrong when I wrote that momentum stocks would rise again at the end of March. Since that article ran on March 29, the iShares MSCI USA Momentum Factor ETF (MTUM) has fallen 1.7%, while the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) has gained 0.2%. But there’s one part of that column I’m feeling o.k. about–Humana (HUM).

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Russ Krull]

Ingles Markets (NASDAQ: IMKTA  ) rang up $700 million from 10-year, 5.75% high-yield notes. The money will fund a tender offer for all $575 million of its 2017 8.75% notes. At the tender offer price, retiring all the existing debt will cost about $600 million, and the deal will save Ingles about $10 million per year in debt service. Any money left after paying for the tender offer goes "to repay certain other debt, to fund capital expenditures and for general corporate purposes."

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Ingles Markets (NASDAQ: IMKTA  ) will release its quarterly report on Monday, and investors have been pleased to see shares of the regional grocery-store chain rise to levels not seen since before the financial crisis. Yet from its vantage in the Southeastern U.S., Ingles Markets has to be concerned about the impact that Kroger's (NYSE: KR  ) proposed buyout of Harris Teeter (NYSE: HTSI  ) might have on the competitive landscape in the region, with a potential threat to Ingles' future prospects looming over the company's stock.

There has been a great deal of concern about the United States suffering from a "lost generation" as Japan has now for several. For investors in oil, this has certainly not been the case: A recent article in The Wall Street Journal noted that oil has risen 310% (Brent Crude) over the last decade. The future looks equally promising for investments in the sector such as ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP), Suncor Energy (NYSE: SU), Americas Petrogas (BOE.V), and Octagon 88 (OTCBB: OCTX).
