Top Consumer Companies To Own For 2014

Just like the media had reported, Elon Musk really was in China on Tuesday. He was on hand to deliver Tesla first eight units of the Model S to Chinese customers. Additionally, Musk was also apologizing to some unhappy consumers for the delayed delivery of their cars.

But most importantly, Musk was here to see through what may be his biggest challenge in China: To ensure Tesla drivers will have access to an adequate supply of electricity through a network of charging stations. Otherwise, his Model S is at risk of becoming a  piece of artwork sitting in the parking lot. (Garage is not a familiar word for Chinese as high-rise is common.)

On WeChat the main information source for scores of Chinese these days the focus of discussion has switched from curiosity to skepticisman the Model S actually survive on China roads? The catalyst for the change in sentiment came from Musk himself during an interview he gave to CCTV News in which he discussed the lack of adequate charging stations.

The rise of VW could hit GM particularly hard, both in terms of reputation and in earnings. GM said it was looking to introduce four new Chevrolet models in China next year, as well as to expand its low-cost Baojun brand. Chinese buyers could already be looking elsewhere though, given the rise of VW and of Tata Motors Ltd. (NYSE: TTM), which sells cars under the Jaguar and Range Rover brands. Advisors' Opinion:

    Xerox (NYSE: XRX  )
Why Xerox? Because Xerox is involved in everything from processing Medicaid claims for the entire state of California, to collecting electronic-health record reimbursements for individual states, and even the design of Nevada's state-run health exchange. Considering that California is expanding its Medicaid program to include up to 1.4 million newly insured people, Xerox could be primed to see its IT-processing and service demand shoot through the roof.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

The S&P 500 dropped 0.5% to 1,781.56 as Xerox (XRX) and E*Trade Financial (ETFC) fell. TheDow Jones Industrial Average outperformed for once: Blue chips fell 0.3% to 15,837.88 as Caterpillar’s (CAT) big gain helped mitigate the big drops in Visa (V) and Goldman Sachs (GS). Still, the Dow fell for a fifth consecutive day, its longest slide since Dec. 5, 2013.

If you notice a bit more cash in coffers this week, it's because we received our quarterly distribution of $0.0575 per share from Xerox (NYSE: XRX  ) on Monday. Xerox is an extremely sneaky play on the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, because it processes all of California's Medicaid claims. Medicaid is set to expand in a big way across the country, bringing some 16-million new members under its umbrella over the next couple of years. Sure, Xerox still makes money from its legacy printing and service revenue; but it's so much more than that now!

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One cyclical consumer goods player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is Xerium Technologies (XRM), a manufacturer and supplier of two types of consumable products, clothing and roll covers, used mainly in the production of paper. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up sharply by 313%.

If you take a look at the chart for Xerium Technologies, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong for the last two months and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $9.94 to its recent high of $12.97 a share. During that uptrend, shares of XRM have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of XRM within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in XRM if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $12.97 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 100,685 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then XRM will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $14.04 a share. Any high-volume move above that level will then give XRM a chance to tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $18 to $20 a share.

Traders can look to buy XRM off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some near-term support at $12.28, or near its 50-day at $11.35 a share. One can also buy XRM off strength once it takes out $12.97 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Patricio Kehoe]

As the U.S. automobile industry recovers, auto parts suppliers are expecting to see increasing sales volumes. Particularly firms such as Delphi Automotive (DLPH) and Stoneridge Inc. (SRI), which specialize in electronic components, expect to make large profits. Increasingly electrified vehicles, higher demand for hybrid and electric powertrain vehicles and stricter governmental emissions regulations should drive revenue growth for these firms in coming years.
