Top Japanese Stocks To Own For 2014

George Soros is heartened by current efforts to revive growth in the world’s major economies, the hapless eurozone being the one exception.

“All of the looming problems for the global economy are political in character,” he writes.

The U.S. is showing its muscle as the developed world’s strongest economy on several counts:

“More surprising, the polarization of American politics shows signs of reversing,” Soros writes, the fever apparently having broken after the recent government shutdown.

In Japan, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is launched on a “risky experiment” of massive quantitative easing in order to reinvigorate a long-stagnant economy. “Faster growth could drive up interest rates, making debt-servicing costs unsustainable,” Soros writes, but Abe and the Japanese man in the street consider the risk worth taking.

But “the major uncertainty facing the world today is lies in the future direction of China,” he writes. “The growth model responsible for its rapid rise has run out of steam.” This constrained the household sector, now only 35% of GDP, in order to drive export and investment growth. But the forced savings can no longer finance the current growth model, leading to a huge rise in the use of various forms of debt financing.

When judging a company's prospects, how quickly it turns cash outflows into cash inflows can be just as important as how much profit it's booking in the accounting fantasy world we call "earnings." This is one of the first metrics I check when I'm hunting for the market's best stocks. Today, we'll see how it applies to Zep (NYSE: ZEP  ) .

  • [By Seth Jayson]

    Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on Zep (NYSE: ZEP  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

  • [By Seth Jayson]

    Basic guidelines
In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven't materialized. Is the current inventory situation at Zep (NYSE: ZEP  ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company's inventory growth to sales growth. How is Zep doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, not so great. Trailing-12-month revenue increased 3.5%, and inventory increased 11.8%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks decent. Revenue grew 7.7%, and inventory grew 11.8%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks OK but not great. Revenue grew 3.4%, and inventory grew 4.7%.

To help facilitate this destruction of value has been that Koss has bought back a lot of its shares as the company has been overvalued. The below quote is from its most recent annual report.
In April of 1995, the Board of Directors approved a stock repurchase program authorizing the Company to purchase from time to time up to $2,000,000 of its common stock for its own account. Subsequently, the Board of Directors periodically has approved increases in the stock repurchase program. As of June 30, 2012, the most recently approved increase was for additional purchases of $2,000,000, which occurred in October of 2006, for an aggregate maximum of $45,500,000, of which $43,360,247 had been expended through June 30, 2012 . No purchases were made during the year ended June 30, 2012. The Company intends to effect all stock purchases either on the open market or through privately negotiated transactions and intends to finance all stock purchases through its own cash flow or by borrowing for such purchases. As you can see from this page, most of KOSS' margins have dropped substantially since 2007. Especially of note is its operating margin, ROE and ROIC. Book value per share, cash flow per share, revenue and working capital have all dropped substantially as well. Normally when I have evaluated companies' cost of goods sold rising is what has caused the above metrics to drop, but that has stayed relatively stable over the years at KOSS. The culprit in this case is selling, general and administrative (SG&A) related expenses expressed below as a percentage of its sales. The following numbers were taken from Morningstar:

  • [By GURUFOCUS]

For investors, Qualcomm understand the benefits of cloud services. It seems there are numerous questions unresolved. Over the last decade, pharmaceutical companies have been aggregating years of research and development data into medical databases, initiating overhauls of its R&D and selling, general and administrative (SG&A) segments for Pharma. A company willing to build their capabilities, and open to a new view of value will likely achieve better outcomes. Delivering support, personalization, scalability, speed and flexibility are attractive areas for growth.
