The story goes that sometime in the early 1990s, a Western Australian gold mining outfit had purchased a pub across the road and included the pub revenue in the gold revenue with costs being accounted for somewhere else below the line in their financials. (Apparently the pub was only marginally profitable, which in itself makes this story highly questionable; but let's not allow details to get in the way of a good story.) One is tempted to ask: "Would'cha like a whiff of beer with that gold?" when calculating 'What It Really Costs' to mine gold for this particular outfit.
Irony aside, we felt it was as good a time as any to sit down and write a short piece on gold mining costs, and why it may not be as simple to produce meaningful metrics as some seem to suggest.
Before we continue, we would like to give references to sources that we used liberally for this article: Brian Christie, VP Investor Relations at Agnico-Eagle (AEM), gave a talk at the Denver Gold Group Luncheon on May 6 in Toronto and the presentation can be viewed here. Andrew J Vigar of Mining Associates gave a keynote at the Mines and Money conference in Hong Kong in March 2013 and the presentation is here. The Visual Capitalist has uploaded a relevant presentation on the topic here. And the Break Away Digger has an interesting piece available here. These documents come with a recommendation for your weekend reading from your humble scribe.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Matt DiLallo]
One of the leaders in the Eagle Ford is EOG Resources (NYSE: EOG ) , the largest producer in the play with production of 153,000 barrels of oil equivalent production per day as of the end of last quarter. The company estimates that it alone can capture about 8% of the estimated 26.4 billion barrels of oil equivalent that's in place. This gives EOG reason to believe it will be drilling on its Eagle Ford acres for the next 15 years, which will keep oil production in the U.S. not only flowing, but growing.

In considering an addition to our portfolio, we looked at EOG Resources (EOG), which is a big ($52B) oil and natural gas producer with decent numbers, but nothing too exciting.

Chesapeake Energy (NYSE: CHK ) recently held its annual investor day. Among the many topics the company discussed was its emerging position in the Powder River Basin in the Rocky Mountains, which it sees becoming a world-class asset. That enthusiasm isn't just being conveyed by Chesapeake Energy. Earlier this year,EOG Resources (NYSE: EOG ) announced that it wasadding four new Rocky Mountain oil playsto its drilling inventory whileDevon Energy (NYSE: DVN ) noted that it was drilling high-impact wells in the Powder River Basin.

For lack of a better form of transportation
The recent surge in rail shipments of oil got its start back in 2009, when EOG Resources (NYSE: EOG ) announced a deal with Burlington Northern Santa Fe to move crude away from the Bakken region to markets such as Cushing, Okla. At that time, only 110,000 barrels of oil per day could be moved away from the region through pipeline, and the expansion of production there meant that other methods would need to happen. While trucking to other markets was deemed uneconomical, the differences in spot prices between Bakken crude and West Texas intermediate made it worth the extra costs to ship by rail.

According to the global market research company Mintel, stevia-based products have increased 400% globally between 2008 and 2012, with a rise of 158% from 2011 to 2012. Stevia has grown so much in demand that the world largest alfalfa grower, California-based S&W Seed (SANW), began growing stevia with high glycoside yields for PureCircle (LN:PURE), the world largest producer of stevia, in 2011 and on roughly 250,118 acres. Now some U.S. tobacco farmers have begun to switch from growing tobacco to stevia, as tobacco sales are sliding and stevia sales are growing.
