Top 10 Rising Companies To Own For 2014

What do Acasti Pharma Inc. (NASDAQ:ACST), Kandi Technologies Group Inc. (NASDAQ:KNDI), and Amarantus Bioscience Holdings, Inc. (OTCBB:AMBS) have in common? Not a lot, if you're simply looking at their business lines. Kandi Technologies Group makes electric cars, and even though Amarantus Bioscience Holdings and Acasti Pharma are both in the pharmaceutical arena, they're not too much alike. There is one common element among AMBS, ACST, and KNDI right now, however... they're three of the market's most bullish setups. Anyone looking for a new trading idea here should start with one of these three.

If the name Amarantus Bioscience Holdings rings a bell, it may be because yours truly took a thorough trading look at it back on December 18th... the last time AMBS shares started to push up and off of rising support line. Sure enough, the stock took off, rallying from $0.0529 then to a high $0.139 by late January. As has been the MO for quite some time, however, shares peeled back from that high to the lower side of the rising trading range again. And once again, they pushed up and off that rising floor.

In a perfect world stocks would move in predictable, manageable ways. We don't live - nor do we trade in - a perfect world. In the real world we have to adapt to and deal with the curve balls the market throws us, and there are no two stocks that illustrate that point better than Document Security Systems, Inc. (NYSEMKT:DSS) and Nortech Systems Incorporated (NASDAQ:NSYS) to today. While both NSYS and DSS are up today, one's overbought and ripe for a pullback, while the other is likely at the beginning of a trade-worthy rally.

Document Security Systems (DSS) is engaged in fraud and counterfeit protection for all forms of printed documents and digital information. This stock closed up 8.7% to $1.68 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $1.48-$1.68

    52-Week Range: $1.37-$4.60

    Tuesday's Volume: 755,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 472,073

From a technical perspective, DSS ripped higher here right above some near-term support at $1.45 with above-average volume. This stock has been downtrending badly for the last three months, with shares dropping from its high of $3.64 to its recent low of $1.37. During that move, shares of DSS have been making mostly lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, shares of DSS have now started to rebound off that $1.37 low and it's now quickly moving within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if DSS manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $1.75 to $1.88 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in DSS as long as it's trending above some near-term support levels at $1.45 to $1.37 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 472,073 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then DSS will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 50-day moving average at $2.05 to its next major resistance area at $2.30. Any high-volume move above those levels will then put its 200-day at $2.39 or $3 into range for shares of DSS.

Investment ideas are scarce and hard to come by at times. People constantly ask me about companies they work for (Bell) or businesses they purchase a lot of product from (P&G or Coca-Cola), and what I think about the prospects/valuation. When it is not the blue chips in the limelight it certainly is the Netflix,Tesla's, 3-D printing, and other companies I would classify as speculative. It is not that I am a Grinch, but I do not like giving out investment ideas. Rather, I attempt to give lessons. Thursday's Range: $9.29-$9.56

    52-Week Range: $2.94-$9.85

    Thursday's Volume: 567,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 951,295

From a technical perspective, ZLC bounced modestly higher here right above its 50-day moving average of $8.70 with lighter-than-average volume. This stock has been consolidating and trending sideways over the last month, with shares moving between $8.44 on the downside and $9.70 on the upside. This spike today is now starting to push ZLC within range of triggering a major breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern. That trade will hit if ZLC manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $9.70 to its 52-week high at $9.85 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ZLC as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $8.70 or above more support at $8.44 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 951,295 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ZLC will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $12 to $14.

Solar companies have reported losses for some time now, but LDK Solar has more debt than most companies, and won't be able to survive with such feeble numbers. At the end of 2012, debt stood at $2.8 billion, and we know now that the company ran out of cash just this week. There's no way LDK Solar can survive on just $135.9 million in quarterly revenue and that kind of debt level. A problem across solar High debt loads and feeble margins aren't a challenge faced by LDK Solar alone. Suntech Power gave in to these pressures last month, defaulting on its own debt. Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE  ) is now the most indebted Chinese solar company, with $2.5 billion in debt, and I wouldn't doubt if they're not far behind LDK and Suntech. The defaults of Suntech and LDK has to be concerning for all of Chinese solar, especially if banks don't keep the free flow of funds that have powered a rapid expansion in production. Balance sheets matter
What's becoming clearer and clearer every quarter is that balance sheets matter, not just for investors, but also for solar installers. Solar modules come with warranties, sometimes stretching as long as 25 years, and if a customer questions whether a company will be around in only a year or two, they may choose another option. Since Chinese modules vary very little from a performance perspective, the customer may choose a better-capitalized company like JinkoSolar instead of Yingli or LDK, or even move to a U.S. company like First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) or SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) . As financial conditions get worse at these companies more and more customers leave and the problems get worse, creating a downward spiral. Last Thursday when I suggested American Community (OTCMKTS:ACYD) was a stock that should be shed immediately, and replaced with a position in Real Goods Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:RSOL), I didn't win a lot of friends. After all, ACYD was the market's newest darling, in the middle of a red-hot runup, while RSOL was "just another solar name" that happened to be lucky enough to stumble its way above a key support line. Well, I hate to be the one to day I told you so, but, I told you so. American Community shares are down 35% since then, while Real Goods Solar shares are up 36% in the meantime. Both stocks seem pretty well entrenched in their current trends too.

My enthusiasm regarding Real Goods Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:RSOL) and Westinghouse Solar Inc. (OTCMKTS:WEST) hasn't exactly been a veiled secret. Though I've favored one over the other at various times since the entire solar panel industry went back into high gear in the middle of the second quarter, I've been a fan of both RSOL as well as WEST for a while. The trick has been finding the right entry spot for both of these volatile stocks.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Tyler Crowe]

Today, it's a different story. We have reduced natural gas imports by 200 billion cubic feet per month, and the prices have converted several power plants, coal's largest customer, to use gas instead. Not only has this deflected all that gas back into the global market, but it has also sent U.S. coal overseas. In 2012, Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU  ) saw a 13% reduction in U.S. coal generation use and exported 120 million tons ofmetallurgicaland thermal coal. The combination of these moves has severely brought down the price of coal around the world and caused several shale gas candidates -- Europe, China, and India -- to increase their coal consumption.

Alpha Natural Resources (ANR) has dropped 23% in 2013, while Arch Coal (ACI) has fallen 39% and Peabody Energy (BTU) is off 28%. Only Consol Energy (CNX) among the larger miners is up this year, having gained a stock-market lagging 15% after saying it would look for ways to reduce its exposure to the business.

    The Energy Strategist Portfolio Update

    First Solar Goes Supernova

Home runs don’t come easily in this business, in part because of the natural temptation to lock in quick gains. This strategy for coping with good fortune, known in scholarly work as disposition bias, can be quite costly, because it rids portfolios of the best-performing, highest-momentum stocks soon after their merits have become more apparent. It’s a great way to turn home runs into doubles.

Don’t make that mistake with First Solar (Nasdaq: FSLR) following the stock’s 18 percent rally Friday in the aftermath of an uncommonly strong earnings report. With today’s 4 percent follow-through, shares are up 67 percent since we recommended purchase on Aug. 28.

The headline numbers included a 50 percent year-over-year revenue jump accompanied by a near-doubling of net earnings to $1.94 per share, while the pro-forma $2.28 per share more than doubled Wall Street’s consensus. First Solar has consistently warned that its results will be lumpy, and this time the lumps proved sweet thanks to the disposal of some projects as well as the first infusion of recognized revenue from a big solar project under construction in California’s Riverside county.

One might further quibble that an annual review lowering the estimated costs of First Solar’s program for recycling obsolete panels from its projects boosted operating earnings by $49 million, or 24 percent.

But the numbers really worth paying attention to are those that prompted us to add the stock to the Growth Portfolio in the first place. These start with First Solar’s rapid marginal improvement in the conversion efficiency ratio of the cadmium-telluride film coating its panels, which gives the share of the available energy they are able to convert into usable power. The ratio reached 13.3 percent by the last quarter’s end, up from 13 percent three months earlier a

Since the middle of August high, more than 48.4% of shares short have been covered.

    Tuesday's Range: $4.00-$4.14
    52-Week Range: $3.50-$5.62
    Tuesday's Volume: 187,000
    Three-Month Average Volume: 103,744

From a technical perspective, EMKR trended modestly higher here back above its 50-day moving average of $4.03 with above-average volume. This stock has been making higher lows over the last three months each time it has pulled back, which is a bullish technical sign. This spike to the upside on Tuesday is starting to push shares of EMKR within range of triggering a big breakout trade. That trade will hit if EMRK manages to take out some key near-term overhead resistance levels at $4.16 to $4.20 and then above $4.22 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in EMKR as long as it's trending above some key near-term support levels at $3.90 to $3.86 or above more support at $3.78 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 103,744 shares. If that breakout gets underway soon, then EMKR will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $4.53 to its 200-day moving average of $4.65, or even $5 to $5.30.

By some measures, Chinese solar manufacturers are improving. Yesterday, Canadian Solar (NASDAQ: CSIQ  ) reported higher-than-expected revenue, a lower loss, and a respectable gross margin of 9.7%. But by others, the market is deteriorating, like Trina Solar's (NYSE: TSL  ) first quarter, when net loss more than doubled from a year ago to $63.7 million.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

Chinese solar companies have been reporting massive losses, but one company has improved its financial performance and strategic position significantly over the past year. In the following video, solar analyst Travis Hoium covers why he thinks Canadian Solar (NASDAQ: CSIQ  ) is a likely candidate to emerge from Chinese solar consolidation, even better than big names such as Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE  ) and Trina Solar (NYSE: TSL  ) . If the company is able to return to profitability, the sky is the limit for Canadian Solar.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

    Who wins?
It's important to remember that the only change from two months ago is that Chinese panels will have a higher price. So, companies such as LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK  ) , who were trying to compete on price alone, will likely be left in the dust. Investors should focus on higher-quality manufacturers like Yingli Green Energy, Trina Solar, and Canadian Solar (NASDAQ: CSIQ  ) as potential winners from the negotiated solar deal.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

In China, Canadian Solar (NASDAQ: CSIQ  ) is doing a better job transitioning to Japan and project development than most, and it would be a much better pick than most. But still, there are risks, and this Fool's choice is to stick with high-quality U.S. companies for which you don't have to depend on government banks for survival.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Aaron Levitt]

While Gazprom will be the major winner of this, the potential losers include U.S. coal stocks Arch Coal (ACI) and Peabody Energy (BTU). Both have already felt the one-two punch of dwindling demand here at home coupled with rising environmental regulations. As two of the biggest suppliers to China, the deal could mean more losses for investors as the Asian Dragon replaces coal with Russian piped gas.

  • [By Justin Loiseau]

Wall Street wasn't aiming high with this corporation. Sales are down a seasonally adjusted 8.5%, while adjusted EPS plummeted 50% as mining companies continually find themselves between a rock and a hard place. But considering Cliff's newest report and Peabody Energy's (NYSE: BTU  ) earnings win earlier this week, it seems that mining companies aren't out of steam yet. Yesterday's report coincided with a new International Energy Outlook report predicting a 56% uptick in global energy use over the next three decades. Mining companies' share prices have trailed the Dow over the past 12 months, with Peabody down 37% and Cliffs lagging a whopping 78%.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Bryan Murphy]

There's no denying that LDK Solar Co., Ltd (NYSE:LDK) has been a notable laggard this year compared to performances from First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:FSLR) and Real Goods Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:RSOL). RSOL is up nearly 180% year-to-date, with a decent chunk of that gain unfurling in just the last couple of months. FSLR is up 25% for the year so far, though that more modest gain would have been much bigger had it not been for February's 24% plunge. Meanwhile, LDK shares are down 22% year-to-date, and have barely even blipped despite the fact that solar energy has become all the rage again in recent months.

  • [By John Udovich]

Small cap solar stock Andalay Solar Inc (OTCMKTS: WEST) has largely cratered for investorsverses solar stock peers Real Goods Solar, Inc (NASDAQ: RSOL) and SolarCity Corp (NASDAQ: SCTY), but is the company finally turning itself around after a failed deal to be acquired?

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Three weeks ago, I recommended Real Goods Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:RSOL) as a buy. Though the stock was still drifting in the shadow of a huge May pullback - from a high of $7.17 to a low of $2.13 by mid-June - RSOL was finding some support at key moving average lines, and even pushing up and off of them. Not many of you (and I'm using "you" interchangeably with "investors in general") seemed to care. So why am I looking at Real Goods Solar again now? Because, with competitors LDK Solar Co., Ltd (NYSE:LDK) and ReneSola Ltd. (NYSE:SOL) seeing their shares surge today, odds are good RSOL is going to get swept up in that move. Real Goods Solar shares are a better bet, however, in that - unlike SOL and LDK - they aren't overbought yet.

Top 10 Wireless Telecom Stocks To Watch Right Now

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) can't make up its mind about today's jobs report. Jobs jumped more than projected, but the Dow has swung wildly between hundred-point gains and minor losses. It has finally settled high in the green in afternoon trading, up 122 points as of 2:15 p.m. EDT. Most stocks are gaining today, with several rising substantially to end investors' week on a high note. Let's catch up on the movers and stories you need to know about.

The ups and downs of a good jobs report
The American economy picked up 195,000 jobs in June -- a whopping 40,000 more jobs than economists had projected, though not enough to shake up the country's 7.6% unemployment rate. A deeper look into the statistic reveals potential concerns, however: The largest gain in hiring came from food service and hotels, with retail, services, and health care also adding to the mix. It was enough to send the U6 unemployment rate -- a measure that includes the unemployed, those who can find only part-time work, and those who have given up searching for a job -- up to 14.3% from a previous 13.8%. While the economy is adding jobs, they may not be the types of jobs that enhance the long-term economic outlook.
