Stephane Jourdain/AFP/Getty Images If you stop by a McDonald's (MCD) and find some franchise owner looking wistfully at you, and then gazing over at a poster for the company's annual Monopoly promotion or the return of the McRib, don't be surprised. Things are tough for franchisees standing under the golden arches, and they're really hoping for something -- anything -- that can reverse the trend of dropping sales. For a fast food company that for a long time could do no wrong , McDonald's is in a not-so-happy place now. In September, the chain announced its worst sales dip since 2003, according to Bloomberg. Between slow demand in the U.S. and health scares over a Chinese meat supplier, same-store sales were down in August 3.2 percent in the U.S. and 7.3 percent in Asia, for an overall 3.7 percent hit. And it's expected that the chain will see another 2.7 percent drop in September, according to the site BurgerBusiness.com. Same-store sales, or sales in locations that have been open more than a year, are a critical measurement in retail. They show how well a company's operations are doing without the distorting factor of new outlets opening. So same-store sales declines are a problem not just for McDonald's, but its franchise owners.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By James E. Brumley]
If the names Axxess Unlimited Inc. (OTCMKTS:AXXU) and MagneGas Corporation (NASDAQ:MNGA) ring a bell, it might be because yours truly posted some bullish thoughts on both names earlier this week. Although neither small cap stock had done everything they needed to do in order become a fully bullish trade at the time, both MNGA and AXXU have cleared those hurdles in the meantime. So, in case you forgot (or in case you missed the first look), an updated review of Axxess Unlimited and MagneGas is merited.

A week and a half ago, yours truly penned some bullish thoughts on Axxess Unlimited Inc. (OTCMKTS:AXXU). Not too many traders read that take, and/or if they did, they didn't seem to care. The response to the commentary was non-existent (good or bad), and there was no sudden rush to go out and buy AXXU. Today's second look may have a different outcome.

David Paul Morris/Bloomberg via Getty Images Apple (AAPL) and Alibaba (BABA) could soon be collaborators. At The Wall Street Journal's WSJD live event, Alibaba's founder and Executive Chairman Jack Ma was asked whether he would consider a partnership between Apple Pay and Alipay, Alibaba's payments company. "I am very interested in that," Ma said. "A good marriage needs both sides to work." When asked about such a partnership Apple CEO Tim Cook said, "We are going to talk about getting married later this week," adding, "I have the utmost respect for Jack." It's been just over a week, but Cook says Apple Pay is already a big success. Within the first 72 hours of Apple Pay's debut, the new mobile payment service had already exceeded more than one million card activations, he said. "We are just getting started," Cook said. He expects more merchants to adopt the service because he believes it's an easier, faster and more secure way to buy goods. However, some merchants such as CVS (CVS) and Rite Aid (RAD) have refused the service. Cook called the tension between Apple and these merchants a "skirmish." Apple Pay is currently available at 220,000 locations around the country. Cook went on to talk about a wide range of subjects including activist investor Carl Icahn's call for Apple to boost its buyback program. Cook defended Apple's current capital return program, noting that the company bought back $17 billion of stock last quarter alone. "I don't spend a lot of time talking to Carl," Cook said. Apple recently reported quarterly results that beat analyst estimates, selling nearly 40 million iPhones. iPad shipments, however, missed wall street's expectations. Cook remains confident in that product, however, noting that the tablet is now used in a variety of markets, from education to enterprise. "I am very excited about that business," Cook said. Apple's CEO also made a point of saying that the tech titan isn't in the business of collecting, storing
