Oil services companies have gotten good at hydraulic fracturing, perhaps too good at it. According to Nabors Industries (NYSE: NBR ) , fracs per day have increased by 50% in the Haynesville Shale. While that may seem like great news, it could be very frustrating for oil services companies. Let's diagnose why and prescribe a potential solution that may resolve this malaise.
Early symptoms: shooting oneself in the foot
During a panel at the EIA energy conference last month, Southwestern Energy vice president Jim Tramuto�declared that we had reached what he called the second quarter of the oil and gas boom. What he means is that companies once rushed to get a well in the ground just to prevent their leases from expiring. Now that those leases have been established, these companies are now focusing on optimizing their operations to get the most out of each dollar spent.
The one thing you can give the oil and gas industry credit for is that it learns quickly. New rig technology like Nabors' PAce-X rig have allowed pad drilling methods to increase wells per rig by 34% in some of the more "mature" shale plays like the Eagle Ford, Bakken, and Marcellus. Also, the 50% gain in fracs per day mentioned above has come thanks to methods such as zipper fracs, which involves alternating pressure at two wells versus fracking one at a time.

The nation's largest hospital providers, HCA Holdings (NYSE: HCA ) and Tenet Healthcare (NYSE: THC ) already expected to benefit in a big way because the individual mandate will help reduce a good chunk of their annual bad debt expenses. In 2012, HCA Holdings wrote off $3.77 billion, or 10.25%, of its revenue to doubtful accounts, with Tenet chiming in with $785 million of writedowns of its own -- nearly 8% of its annual revenue. Adding pricing transparency on top of the benefits to come from the individual mandate could help these two large hospitals improve their public image with patients and shareholders by making elective procedure costs accessible at the click of a button.

Take, for instance, the flat penalty for failing to obtain health insurance in 2014 is just $285 per family, or 1% of family income -- whichever is greater. This relatively minuscule fee may encourage currently uninsured individuals to remain uninsured, making little headway on hospitals' doubtful provisions. At the same time, Medicare reimbursement rates for acute-care hospitals are likely to fall in 2014 and beyond as the government attempts to reduce its roll in funding many for-profit health care institutions. This is a dicey scenario for large hospital operator HCA Holdings (NYSE: HCA ) , which logged more than 10% of its total revenue last year as doubtful. If a sizable number of patients walking into its hospitals remain uninsured, HCA will be unable to meaningfully reduce its doubtful accounts as reimbursement rates fall. To that end, it's not unexpected to see hospitals wavering on spending big bucks on the da Vinci surgical system, which is approaching a $2 million price tag!
